BIMTECH Convocation: an extra special day

A B-School with a difference, BIMTECH has its roots firmly in tradition. The leit motif of BIMTECH is Excellence with Values.  In keeping with this principle, the institute decided to hold its 24th convocation on 31 March, 2012, the 150th Birth Anniversaries of two great Indians – Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda.

The 2012 convocation was held for over 379 students in all belonging to batches of PGDM, PGDM-IB, PGDM-IBAM, PGDM-RM and PGDM – IB (SDP). Each graduating student became a member of the BIMTECH Global Alumni Community. They were bright and ready to explore new avenues and careers. A large percentage are placed with the 86 corporates that visited BIMTECH this year.

“The convocation day, for any educational institution, is a great event in the life of the scholars, parents and guardians, faculty and all stake holders of an institution.   It is a day of hope, of fulfilment and of plans for the future,” Chairperson Ms. Jayshree Mohta said.

Introducing the Chief Guest, Mr. Vineet Rai, Ms. Mohta added, “On such an occasion, the Chief Guest who delivers the convocation address adorns the mantle of a mentor, who can guide, enlighten and mould the outlook of the young hopefuls. Mr. Rai occupies a very vital constitutional position in our country as the supervisory authority of the nation’s finances and expenditure. He is a very distinguished civilian who has occupied crucial positions in his illustrious career as a government servant. He has blazed a new trail in the cause of sound corporate governance and ethical conduct, inspiring not only our countrymen but also many in other nations as well.”

Dr. H. Chaturvedi, Director, BIMTECH elaborated the well planned theme as he presented the Director’s Report to the audience. “We are planning to organize several seminars, conferences, workshops and quizzes in the coming year to celebrate the 150th birth anniversaries of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda,” he said. This is totally in keeping with BIMTECH’s ethos of always upholding the tradition of work ethics – a novelty in today’s world of ruthless material pursuits. BIMTECH is very conscious of its legacy that comes down from the teachings and values inculcated by the forward thinking and highly revered Shri G D Birla.

Another pearl of information that Dr. H. Chaturvedi revealed was the fact that Prof. Ishwar Dayal, founding faculty of IIM Ahmadabad and IIM Kolkata, and Founder Director of IIM Lucknow has joined BIMTECH as the B-School’s Chief Mentor.

He went on to speak of the achievements of BIMTECH. Among them is the B-School’s consistent performance in media rankings. “Our institute has been ranked 7th under the CNBC-TV18’s A List of B-Schools, 10th in Business Today-Nielsen Survey and 9th in MBA Universe Survey among the top private B-Schools of India,” Dr. Chaturvedi said.

Mr. Rai’s inspirational address was very well received by the audience. He kept them engrossed and perked their interest when he said, “You need to be ethics leaders. You have to set the tone and create a culture of honesty and integrity. There will be times which will be tough. It is in these times that there will be inclination to cut corners or take half measures. You have to stand up in such moments of crisis and have faith in your ability. Do not succumb to the temptation of short term gains. Ethical conduct is a prerequisite for any sustainable business.”

“ To top at BIMTECH, communicate your ideas and justify them,” says PGDM (RM) topper Garima Gupta

To those who know her, one thing that comes to mind about Garima Gupta – apart from the fact that she has topped her batch at BIMTECH – is the word ‘fiercely competitive’. The only difference is that she is constantly competing with herself, and not someone else.

“Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow”, Garima quotes Ronald E. Osborne. “Whether it was school, engineering, or BIMTECH, I always ensured that I beat my own performance. Be it sports, academics or extra-curricular, competing with myself and doing better each time, was my key to coming out with flying colours.”

Garima is an out-and-out Delhi girl, with schooling from Father Agnel School, New Delhi, followed by a B.Tech in Computer Science from IILM, Greater Noida, and now, an MBA from BIMTECH. She chose BIMTECH because of its brand name; the fact that BIMTECH is in NCR made matters easier.

Her colleagues at BIMTECH describe her as focused and determined, as well as fun-loving; someone who doesn’t neglect academics, while enjoying college life.

“The journey right to the top of my batch at BIMTECH has been terrific. Infact, the high CGPA cannot simply be attributed to studying hard. It was also because of an understanding of what the examiners expected me to know, and writing just that… and getting across my ideas and justifying them. That’s what BIMTECH transforms us into – ‘thinking’ managers of the future. This requires a certain kind of confidence that develops in a relaxed learning environment like BIMTECH’s.”

Garima, who has landed a placement with Titan Industries Limited as a Retail Executive Trainee, believes that her top-of-the-class grades at BIMTECH did get her the big interviews, but inside the interview room, it was her knowledge and communication skills that counted more.

“The faculty members at BIMTECH are very knowledgeable and possess remarkable industry experience. Their guidance during our ‘on job training’, was priceless. But the most important quality that BIMTECH embeds in you is that easy confidence with which you communicate your ideas. My advice to my juniors at BIMTECH is to be completely honest with the recruiters. They are very experienced and a fake answer can pull down your entire interview.”

Garima has specialized in retail management from BIMTECH – a course which very few B-schools in India offer.

“Skills acquired at BIMTECH, are bound to come handy in my contribution to my company. The future for me will depend very much on what is it that I’ll excel in, during my training period. I’m confident that my BIMTECH-edge will set me apart from the rest of my colleagues.”

‘BIMTECH SETS YOU APART FROM THE CROWD’ Ms. Garima Arora, Gold Medalist, PGDM

Garima Arora’s journey from a small-town girl, to a MBA gold-medalist from BIMTECH is nothing short of spectacular. Born and raised in Bulandshahar, UP, Garima went to school at DPS, Bulandshahar. There are many in Bulandshahar who dream of making it to the Delhi University, but very few actually do. Garima Arora was one of those chosen few.

She made it to B.Com (Honours) at Hans Raj College, where she discovered her passion for finance. She decided to go for an MBA in finance from a reputed B-school.

BIMTECH is one of the most reputed management colleges in Delhi-NCR, with outstanding infrastructure, innovative curriculum and a highly qualified faculty,” Garima opines.

The two years that followed, were a perfect blend of fun and learning at BIMTECH. Garima calls it the ‘most exciting and valuable time’ of her life. Ofcourse, there were the assignments, presentations and tests, but there was equal stress on extracurricular activities and sports. “BIMTECH gave me the correct atmosphere to groom myself,” remarks Garima happily. It gave her the license to enjoy the events, parties and workshops organized in the campus.  The course structure in BIMTECH gave her a holistic view of the corporate world, but she would always look forward to interacting with professors and alumni at various events at BIMTECH. It gave her a first-hand feel of the industry as well as honed her communication skills.

“My advice to juniors at BIMTECH is that internship is your big opportunity to apply your knowledge in a practical scenario. My interview revolved majorly around my internship experience and projects, which I handled pretty well.”

Not only has Garima landed a plum job as an associate consultant, but is also the proud ‘Gold Medalist’ of her course. BIMTECH’s emphasis on equal importance to both academics and extracurricular activities brought out the best in her.

BIMTECH has sharpened my analytical skills and equipped me to face challenges. I picture myself growing very quickly in the Company, to the level of Senior Manager in 5 years.”

She knows that the world outside BIMTECH is a competitive world of consumer-driven markets, where enterprises are run on the basis of collaborative work and cultures are driven by innovations. But she is confident that BIMTECH has provided her with the knowledge, skills set and competence that will set her apart from the crowd.

“BIMTECH has been a life-changing experience,” -Mr. Nipun Puri – Gold medalist, PGDM(IB)

Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) completely changed his life for the better says Nipun Puri, the gold medallist for the PGDM (IB) class of 2010-12.

“At the end of this journey of two years, when I look back at what I was before coming here, I see a complete changeover in myself,” he said.

“Be it my personality, my attitude, my approach towards life – everything changed and changed positively.”

Puri said while academically, he learned models, theories and ways to solve industrial problems, his educational experience at BIMTECH provided much more.

BIMTECH gave me confidence, taught me how to be in a professional environment, how to handle stress, how to handle workload and how to maintain a balance between your personal and professional life,” he said. “In short it was a preface of my whole professional life which is yet to come.”

Born in Ghazipur (U.P), he came to Delhi as a child when his father was transferred in the metropolis and finished his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya Vigyan Vihar, New Delhi. He then went to Kanpur to study engineering in computer science and landed a job at a software firm in Delhi.

Wanting to further his career in management, he left the job after three months, did a crash course for CAT and got selected for BIMTECH as well as ICFAI Hyderabad.

BIMTECH won out, he said “as I found BIMTECH has nurtured better managers in past and provides a very good learning environment.”

Graduating this year, he accepted a supply chain position with HCL Technologies (Infrastructure Service Division) and feels confident about his success.

“I think I’m well prepared to take the job and the challenges,” said Puri, “as the subject knowledge given to me by BIMTECH and its faculty has been commendable and I also worked hard on my respective domain knowledge.”

He believes programs such as those taught at BIMTECH are a definite plus when planning a management career.

“Courses like this bring forth an overall change in an individual from his personality to his knowledge, to his way of looking at life,” he said. “In today’s competitive world it is very important to have something which makes you stand out and courses like this enable you to do so.”

Puri believes if you don’t have a goal you will not survive – and he definitely has goals.

Looking five years down the road in his position at HCL he’s aiming for series of promotions.

“Huge opportunities are waiting for me and for the coming generation also,” he said. “The only thing you need to do is to be the one who can fulfill the requirements in a better way.

BIMTECH’s student Vidisha Singhal lands a prime post at HDFC ERGO General Insurance

Graduating at the top of her class and landing a prime position at HDFC ERGO General Insurance, Vidisha Singhal is another Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) success story.

Receiving her initial schooling from St. Mary’s Senior Secondary School, she obtained her BTech from the Electronics and Communication Branch of Galgotias College of Engineering and Technology and worked with HCL Tech as a graduate engineer trainee for two years before deciding to go for an MBA at BIMTECH.

“I chose BIMTECH, since it is one of the premier B-Schools in India and renowned for its studies, faculty and extracurricular activities,” she said. “It gives a platform for its student to be leaders as well as managers.”

Her life at BIMTECH has been an active one – not just academically, but also in sports. As an executive member of the Sports Conduit she got a chance to apply and enhance her managerial skills learning to organize various tournaments and events.

Vidisha was also associated with the NGO of BIMTECH, where she learned about the realities of poverty and realized how much should be done to help needy people.

“There can be no end to the help which can be extended,” she said. “We have opened many libraries in various villages and our recent and most successful event was a library in Dasna Jail Ghaziabad.”

Vidisha also served as class representative and said in total, all these activities gave her a complete mixture theory and practical experience.

“The learning platform which we get in BIMTECH cannot be provided in a better manner anywhere else,” she said. “Being a residential course, after-class evening events organized by various clubs such as Entrepreneurial cell, BIZMARK and INMOS helped us in applying our classroom studies practically.”

Vidisha now feels totally prepared to take on her new position as management trainee at HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company – one of the leaders in general insurance – and gave credit to the BIMTECH faculty and alumni.

BIMTECH puts a lot of emphasis on guest lectures, has a wide network of its alumni and this network of guests and alumni helped her learn about the industry and how it works.

“My academic experience at BIMTECH has helped me personally as well,” she said. “I was an introvert by nature; however BIMTECH has helped me enhance my interpersonal skills.”

She said in today’s highly competitive world of business, an organization expects a lot more from employees. Before, “employees use to learn the work culture after joining the organization. Now they expect us to already know it and perform out of the box,” said Vidisha. “Hence, it is necessary for an individual to go for a course like the one offered by BIMTECH. It helps in development of a complete professional person, ready to join an organization and perform out of the box.”

BIMTECH’s Prof Dhruva Chak conducts lectures in UK

Prof Dhruva Chak, BIMTECH’s Area Head (Marketing), visited University of Hertfordshire Business School (UH),Hatfield, U.K. He was part of a collaborative project between 200 plus UH BBA students and 86 of BIMTECH’s PGDM Marketing students.

Funded by a grant to UH, Prof Dhruva Chak’s visit to UK was an effort to explore the possibility of launching new services in India.

He found the experience and experiment to be really useful. It put things in perspective for both institutes. “I don’t think either BIMTECH or the University of Hertfordshire have done an experiment of this scale,” Prof Chak says. The scale he is talking about involved the rather huge number of 300 plus people, including professors. Student wise, there were 86 from BIMTECH and 200 from UH.

As these services are proposed to be launched in India, BIMTECH students researched on them. Prof Chak, on the first day of his visit, spoke of the Challenges and Opportunities in Launching a New Service in India. Across 3 days he met with 43 tutorial groups of five students each. Along with their professors he discussed collaborative projects they are undertaking with their BIMTECH counterparts. “It is hoped that the project would result in some selected services actually being launched through some investors in Britain,” Prof Chak explains.

The size of each team was seven students with five from UH and two from BIMTECH. “The UH students were not really aware of our Indian environment, just as we were not aware of theirs,” he observes. This resulted in a few first-step challenges. One was cultural differences. The second – awry schedules due to the time differences between the two countries.  It all worked out in the end with students and professors finding common ground to make this project feasible in the long run. “There was a lot of learning for the students as well as for us,” he says. “It is not very easy to get these kinds of numbers to agree on projects. And we were talking about 43 different projects – a very major exercise.”

Prof Chak thinks the future of such collaborative projects is bright. He foresees an exchange of students and faculty with UH Business School. However he observes, “There could be a better balance in the number of students involved on either side. They had five students and we had two. In future, they may reduce the numbers of students involved in the project to make it more focused and more controlled.”

On his return, Prof Dhruva Chak carries home memories of interested students wanting to know more about the real India, in terms of both business opportunities and culture.

A K Agarwala talks about G D Birla’s management style at BIMTECH

Shri Agarwala, Member, Board of Governors, BIMTECH, spoke at the Seminar Hall on March 19, 2012. He talked about his myriad experiences and the important lessons he learnt from his close association with Late G D Birla, founder of the great Birla Empire.

Late G D Birla, the visionary, always said, “it is easy to earn money, but difficult to use it wisely.”

Shri Agarwala quipped, “That ‘easy’ is not that easy.” Money is never easy to earn, and is even more difficult to spend wisely. Making money or earning more money is actually a multi-faceted combination of earning, spending, retaining and making full utilization of the finance power vested in one.

“Late GD Birla was a highly focused man with money. He could earn it, spend it, retain it and make the most useful utilization of it,” Shri Agarwala said. GD was a financial wizard. And he was a man with foresight. Shri Agarwala related an example of the initial stages of HINDALCO. The company was in collaboration with the third largest producer of aluminium in the world. “When we started, the capacity was 20,000 tonnes per annum. At the time the total production of India was only 10,000 tonnes. To start a company with such a high capacity at that time was not a simple task. Our budget was Rs. 20 Crores – a huge amount in 1956-57. GD asked us how we could utilize the funds economically and differently. We came out with a budget of Rs. 16 Crores and started operations of the plant in exactly Rs. 15.6 Crores,” he remembered and emphasized, “Money has to be valued.”

“GD would pay a lot of attention to finance. To arrange funds to the tune of Rs. 20 to Rs. 30 Crores was not a joke. There was no financial institutions, no LIC, no IDB, you could not approach foreign investors because they did not give to India, you could not borrow from the government, yet he could manage funds in such a way that no conditions were attached to it,” Shri Agarwala remembers.

Late G.D. Birla believed in grooming his own people. During those days, India had no B-Schools to do the job for him. He would personally train his people by assigning them work, directing them and making them work. “Whatever I learnt I learnt under him,” Shri Agarwala said, proudly, adding, “Today grooming being a crucial factor, we take the help of institutions. Fundamentals are the same: Focus on work, focus on financing, budget and complete the job on time. Utilize the resources available to the maximum extent,” he ended.

BIMTECH’S After 11 Cafe prime example of on-campus entrepreneurship in action

The entrepreneurial efforts of the Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) Ecell club EntrePioneer have helped feed hungry students right on campus.

Best known for its annual E Week celebrations held in collaboration with the National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN), EntrePioneer aims to create not only entrepreneurs but future business leaders by helping students start up their own business right from graduation.

Three PGDM students Amita Punjani, Annu Malik and Anindita Dhir, took up the challenge and put heart and soul into the planning and creation of the After 11 Café, a night cafe opened in the hostel of BIMTECH.

Annu, the marketing and operations head of After 11 Café, said the trio considered entrepreneurship a very lucrative career option to take up after completing their MBA and market analysis showed a demand for a café from students who stayed up late .

BIMTECH helped them with seed funding to begin the venture – which they returned from their first month’s profit.

Starting out serving the basic necessities like tea, coffee, maggi, sandwiches and self-invented delicacies like mumbaiya bun, kurkure chaat and mocktails, along with run of the mill items such as chips and biscuits, the café was an instant hit with students.

The After 11 Café soon became the talk of BIMTECH for its menu and reasonable prices, with students sometimes skipping the mess dinner to eat there.

While it was hard work and hectic at the beginning, Amita, the finance and supply chain head, said the venture taught them efficient time management.

Anindita, the human resources and logistics head said “we got to learn all the aspects of running an organization, like marketing, finance, operations and HR. Running a business gave us market understanding of the entire channel, from the suppliers to the customers and we developed a risk-taking appetite to bear the expected and unexpected losses at times.”

A share of the profits was re-invested in the business, expanding it and broadening the menu, boosting the popularity and maintaining heavy traffic.

All-in-all the After 11 Café should be an entrepreneurial inspiration for years to come.

BIMTECH’s Prof Shri Prakash: The World is His Oyster

Listing Prof. Shri Prakash’s achievements pose quite a task. Even the important ones cover several pages, and he has many publications, including a cluster of books with his name on them. BIMTECH is proud of this Professor of Eminence and former Dean who headed the Centre for Research Studies at the institute till July 2011.

The more you read about Dr. Shri Prakash, the more you wonder at one man’s capacity to achieve so much. Over the decades, he has served in colleges and universities across India and UK, where researched for Post Doctoral work. Dr. Prakash’s expertise lies in Quantitative Techniques, Input Output Economics, Operational Research, Human Resource Planning and Development, Economics and Management of Inventories and Consumer Behaviour. Obviously his plate of work is filled to the brim and includes travel to distant parts of the globe for the cause of academia and research.

Indian B-Schools have been lamenting the state of research – or lack of it. This is a huge stumbling block in B-Schools’ progress and the cause lies in the selfishness of the British Raj. “The handful of universities during the British period did not encourage research and most of the faculty members had done no research, and were not research oriented. They excelled in learning/scholarship and dissemination of knowledge. Naturally, facilities of research were not given weight. Whatever took place was due to individual efforts of the few scientists, who went abroad for higher studies including research. No financial support was available. Only the sons of the rich could afford the cost,” he says. Among those who went abroad, many chose to stay there. Making India even more starved for research oriented studies.

Even though India tried to catch up on research post independence, the country concentrated only on scientific research in the initial stages. Social Engineering and areas like Social Transformation and Economic Change suffered. Luckily that changed with the emergence of British Commonwealth. “It provided financial support for Doctoral and Post Doctoral research to citizens of all member countries. Private foundations in US and UK also provided funding to scholars of third world countries. More Ph.D. degree holders entered academia. Research became more important than before,” Prof. Prakash says.

Currently, however, learning is taking a back seat. Placements and internships are getting preference over actual classroom learning. For example, when a course is supposed to be for two years, hardly 8-10 months are available for teaching and learning. “Most of the time is spent in the conduct of the trimester examinations, organization of events, so called summer and winter projects, placement and so on. What possible learning could be acquired during this limited period?” He makes his point. If students are busy with other activities like events, internships and placements, where is the time for research oriented learning?

Private professional institutions consider preparing professionals for corporate jobs as their main business. “Naturally, research cannot flourish in such an environment.”

Many private B-schools and professional institutions even discourage faculty to conduct research. Even otherwise heavy teaching and administrative work load does not leave them without time and energy for research.

BIMTECH takes research seriously. Prof. Prakash is seeing the B-School spearhead a lot more constructive change. “At BIMTECH, research is a function of passion and commitment to never ending quest for new knowledge,” his point is as clear as a bright, sunny day.
