“The case was presented in the Global Summit on Management Cases (GSMC) in IIM, Raipur in December 2014. ET cases got interested in this case and a highly revised version of the case has now been published in ET Casebook.”
International Retail and E-commerce are the current flavours in the market today. While researching on MNCs from emerging countries, Dr. Abha Rishi, Associate Professor-International Business at BIMTECH came across an intriguing company from South Africa, Naspers. It is at this time that Manideep Nulu and Krishna Sai, students of PGDM-Retail Management course at BIMTECH, got fascinated in Tradus, which is an e- commerce company in India supported by Naspers. Tradus is a part of the Naspers group, a $22 billion (JSE: NPN) multinational media group and one of the biggest groups of e-commerce and media brands in the world. Naspers is presently headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa. The fact that the conglomerate has acquired 17 e-commerce companies in just 4 years proves to be an example of how focused the group is on investing in e-commerce.
Naspers entered India by investing in and gradually acquiring ibibo.com, an online gaming portal which had a sister concern, goibibo.com, which is an online travel portal. The advent of Naspers in India has been discussed in this case, by taking an example of Tradus.in and how Naspers handled its operations in India with relation to the group’s other investments in leading e-commerce players in the country like Flipkart.
