NHRDN – YOUNG HR ICON
NHRDNIt was a great learning experience for me. For the first time in life I was facing a national level competition in the domain of my passion which is HR. During the competition I made some good connections and learnt a lot. I got to know about the areas of HR which needs immediate attention in these VUCA times such as leadership development, employee engagement and retention. This entire journey wouldn’t be possible without the support of both HR and non-HR faculty. I was guided by each and every teacher. They helped me not only in collecting information but also guided me in making my presentation for the competition. I found this competition to be an insightful experience providing excellent exposure for the HR students. This was the first time that such a competition was held and I hope that there will be more participation from our institute in the following years.

BIMTECH students won the MTS iNNOVATSii competition and a study tour to Russia.

It was a proud moment for BIMTECH, when a team of 4 students from the institute was invited to the prestigious Russian Centre for Science and Culture, New Delhi, on the 11th of December, 2014, for presenting their idea that won them the MTS iNNOVATSii the competition which includes a fully sponsored educational trip to Russia. The event was organized by Sistema, one of the largest corporate organizations in Russia, in collaboration with MTS India on the eve of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s visit to India. IMG_2193The aura of the event was very provoking for young innovative minds. Russian winners and Indian winners exhibited their ideas in the designated stall areas to the professors, VCs, bureaucrats, journalists and other delegates from various spheres of life. The innovators interacted among themselves and shared ideas and knowledge. The similarities and differences between India and Russia have enhanced the interaction and the unique learning that can be acquired. For example, a product like I-Health, presented by a Russian, which can diagnose more than 100 diseases just from the surface of the skin can be a very relevant product for Indian rural areas. Another project that addressed the bottom of the pyramid is the labour market management system presented by the students of IIT Madras. There are many such innovative ideas like fingerprint authentication system, visual, speech recognition system, roof top farming and real time real estate planning systems which are relevant for Russian and Indian context. The Chief guest of the summit Dennis Manturov, Minister for Trade and commerce, Federation of Russia, has acknowledged the importance of sharing innovation between Russia and India, which can be symbiotic for both the countries for the similarities in both, the opportunities the countries present and the kind of challenges that the countries face.

Mr. Mikhail Shamolin, President, Sistema JFC, another important guest spoke about the contribution of Russian innovators for the civilization and spoke about an exhibition that was organized in which different key innovations made in Russia in the past have been presented. He also spoke about the importance of innovation in the present and the future and how Sistema JSFC is contributing in taking civilization forward. The guest from the Indian side who addressed to the gathering was Amitabh Kant, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) Government of India, who is known for being the man behind the hugely successful ‘Incredible India’ initiative. Other guests who spoke on the occasion were MTS India CEO and a VC. They spoke about the power of internet penetration and the kind of success it can give to young enterprises if the idea is right. They said conversion of a good idea into a funded business requires the right kind of market need and a committed and right team. The different teams were presented with certificates, mementoes and the boarding pass to Russia. Finally, the day ended with a high tea and VC interaction. Indeed, this day was just a starting point for the young innovators of BIMTECH for their possible entrepreneurial venture.

The CIBER Programme

The CIBER Program was created by The Congress to foster international understanding and enhance the ability of American businesses to prosper in the world economy. The Smith School CIBER helps to achieve this mission by integrating the Smith School’s extensive international resources with those of Washington area institutions and organizations.

Thanks to an initiative launched by the Centre for International Affairs four BIMTECH students Aastha Jain, Ankur Rohilla, Praveen Yeluri and Tushar Bahl, chosen through a rigorous selection process, spent a week in Washington D.C. collaborating with their counterparts from the Robert H Smith Business School, University of Maryland, to work on a Consultancy project for the client Jayshree Tea. Prof. Dhruva Chak is the BIMTECH mentor for this project.

The CIBER Project
The Smith School CIBER International Consulting Program provides its Master of Business Administration students, the opportunity to work in collaboration with students from leading business schools in other countries on actionable consulting projects. This gives them the first-hand experience of traveling to, and working in other countries and to obtain exposure in global business practices, issues, conditions, etc.

Experience in Washington D.C.
Most of the sessions took place in the Ronald Reagan Building located in the heart of Washington DC. Prof Dhruva Chak, presented the overview of India as a country and also showed the audience a corporate presentation and a corporate film. Mr Sumit Dalan, Manager, Tea Exports for Jayshree Tea presented the company and the problems faced by them to the audience. The project involves widening the scope of Jayshree’s operations and strengthening its sales of packed tea. The project will continue virtually through the ELMS system where mentors and students will be on the same page as far as project progress is concerned. Smith school students will visit India for a fortnight in January and final presentation will be made before the client in Kolkata.

Another consultancy project is also underway as part of the CIBER project, between Smith School students and those of the University of Chile.

During the week in Washington the students benefited from the educative talks on Project Management, Cross Cultural Challenges in International Business and Consulting Strategies by Smith School faculty and practitioners from Deloitte. They also spent several sessions working with Smith School students in defining and fine tuning the scope of the Consultancy project that they were working on. A presentation was made towards the concluding session before Prof. Dhruva Chak and Prof. Sunil Mithas and all those involved in both the CIBER projects.
The students were also taken to the World Bank where they witnessed a presentation on the history, setting up, functioning and relation of the World Bank to other financial institutions such as IMF and IBRD.
Apart from the academic side of the trip, various novel cultural and other treats were in store for our students. The hospitality received from Smith School students and faculty was truly heart – warming.
