Background
Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world offering economic engagement, social inclusion and cultural presentation of any region. Prior to the pandemic globally, Travel & Tourism was one of the world’s largest sectors, accounting for 1 in 4 of all new jobs created in the world, 10.3% of all jobs (333 million), and 10.3% of global GDP (USD 9.6 trillion), with international visitor spending amounting to USD 1.8 trillion in 2019 (6.8% of total exports). Travel & Tourism enables socio-economic development, job creation, poverty reduction, and provides unique opportunities to women, minorities, and young people. This data and the growth of tourism in recent years confirms that tourism is currently one of the most powerful drivers of economic growth and development. With the given size of the industry, it has significant potential to damage the planet ecosystem and the cultural and heritage facets if not dealt in responsible way.
