1. What do we publish?

1.1 Aims & Scope

Before submitting your manuscript to South Asian Journal of Business and Management Cases (SAJBMC), please ensure you have read the Aims & Scope.

1.2 Article types

South Asian Journal of Business and Management Cases (SAJBMC) invites stimulating original, unpublished research/teaching cases, case studies, based on primary and/or secondary data, empirical data, or significant experience of learning on various facets of management. Pure and applied research does not fall under the domain of SAJBMC. Fictitious cases are not welcome.

SAJBMC aims at international relevance and encourages authors from all over the world, but a certain preference will be given to papers that focus on socio-economic context of South Asian region.

Preferred Case Focus

Cases from all management disciplines are welcome, including but not limited to the following:

  • Innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainability and CSR, human resources management, organization development, transnational cultural impacts, knowledge management, technology management;
  • Strategy, management interventions, organization experiences and practices, management science, management decision making, globalization, international trade;
  • Operations management, logistics, supply chain management, service operations management, marketing management, information technology;
  • Social enterprise management, NGOs and NPOs, public sector management, civic administration, public-private partnership.
  • Ethics, corporate governance, ecology, financial inclusion, business excellence, business process reengineering, Accounting, and finance

Journal prefers problem identification, decision focused, application-based cases containing contextual dilemma (such as ethical issues), cases that deals with recent business or people related issues, having strong linkages with theory, places dilemma before the reader within first two paragraphs, includes controversy, contrasts, conflicts, and other dramatic elements, all such cases will need the presence of protagonist. Cases written with primary data or single frim cases written with secondary data, must obtain the consent to publish from the target organisation and are written using 5000 words or less – tables and figures included

Please format your submissions as per the following guidelines:

  • Abstract (150–200 words): Should bring out the purpose and importance of the case.
  • Keywords (5–7 words).
  • All submissions should only be in MS word document.
  • Follow APA style. Take extra care in the reference section. Check if all citations are appearing in the reference section and vice- versa.
  • Remove all notes. Convert them into citation and referencing. For a case written with the help of secondary data, endnotes may be retained.
  • Ensure the proper style of citation and referencing for materials downloaded from the website. Most of the journals follow ‘Retrieved from…’ and ‘Accessed on…’
  • Use UK English. Write ‘Analyse’ instead of ‘Analyze’. Write ‘Colour’ instead of ‘Color’.
  • All figures and tables should be in black and white. Colour displays are not acceptable.
  • Please remember that in a black and white print, reproduction of half-tone figures is of poor quality.
  • As much as possible avoid copy paste of tables and graphs. Redraw afresh. Copy pasted figures or tables are not accepted.
  • Each table and each figure should have table and figure numbers and titles. Separate numbering for tables and figures. Each table and figure must have a source.
  • The entire document, including tables, figures, and graphs, must be in Times New Roman 12 point font size with 1.5 line spacing. Follow APA style
  • Exercise utmost care to avoid spelling and grammatical errors. Proofread the copy carefully. Take help of experts
  • The full document, including abstract, tables, figures, graphs and references, should not exceed 5000 words.
  • For the benefit of the international audience, all financial figures expressed in any currency should have USD equivalent as well. Units of million and billion should be used.
  • Annexures (diagrams, images, figures, tables, graphs): Please follow instructions as detailed in the section ‘The Guidelines’.
  • Endnotes: These should be consecutively numbered and presented at the end of the article.
  • Bio briefs: Please furnish brief particulars of each author in not more than 25 words.
  • No need to submit a teaching note. The journal does not publish a teaching note.

Permissions, Releases and Declaration

  • Material taken directly from a copyrighted source, including a website, should be clearly identified, and the copyright holder’s written permission to reproduce it must be submitted in a separate file. Obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material is the author’s responsibility, as is payment of any fees the copyright holder may request. Further information and a template Permission Request Letter is available in the Permissions section on SAGE’s Journal Author Gateway (http://www.sagepub.com/authors/journal/permissions.sp).
  • Identifiable images of people should be accompanied by a signed release granting permission for their likeness to be reproduced in an article. (In children’s cases, the release form must be signed by a parent or guardian.)   • Each submission must be accompanied by a Declaration (format as under) signed by all the authors. Please pick what is applicable from 3/4.
    • The submission is original, unpublished and not submitted simultaneously to any journal/ conference/seminar for consideration of publication/presentation.
    • Formal permissions have been obtained from responsible authorities for use of copyrighted information, reproductions. These are attached vide list enclosed.
    • We have used primary sources of information/information from a sponsored research study/ project. The permission from a responsible authority to use the same is attached.
    • We have used only secondary sources of information as available in the public domain and none of these is copyrighted.
    • We alone are responsible for the correctness of events, the accuracy of information and data used and charges of plagiarism. We have followed ethics and research protocol.

The Guidelines

  • Contributors must provide their affiliation, complete postal and e-mail addresses. In case there are two or more authors, the corresponding author’s name and contact details should be clearly indicated on the first page.
  • It is the author’s responsibility to disclose any potential conflict of interest regarding the manuscript.
  • All figures, i.e., diagrams, images and photographs, and tables should be provided separately from the text at the end and numbered in the order that they appear in the text. Locations of tables and figures should be indicated in the text using callouts (e.g., ‘[see Table 1]’). Each figure and table should have a heading, an explanatory caption if necessary, and a source or reference in a separate file.
  • Black and white illustrations must be supplied electronically at a resolution of at least 300 dpi and 1500 pixels, like .eps, .tif or .jpg files. They should be saved separately from the article file. All figures should have short descriptive captions and source details typed on a separate sheet. Even for photographs/images available in the public domain, it should be clearly ascertained whether or not their reproduction requires permission for purposes of publishing (which is a profit-making endeavor).
  • Endnotes should be numbered serially, the numbers embedded in the manuscript. The notes should be presented at the end of the article. Notes must contain more than a mere reference.
  • Use British rather than American spellings. Use the ‘z’ variant of British spelling.
  • It is the responsibility of authors to ensure that their articles are written in an acceptable international standard of English.
  • Submissions should use non-sexist and non-racist language.
  • When referring to social actors ‘woman/women’ should be used, not ‘female/females’, unless the context requires otherwise. Similarly, ‘man/men’ should be used, not ‘male/males’. ‘Female’ and ‘male’ should be used when referring to the construction of social identity.
  • Use single quotes throughout. Double quotes should only be used within single quotes. Spellings of words in quotations should not be changed. Quotations of 45 words or more should be separated from the text and indented with a line space above and below.
  • While referring to periods/decades, use ‘nineteenth century’/‘1980s’. Spell out numbers from one to nine, 10 and above to remain in figures. However, for exact measurements use only figures (3 km, 9 percent not %). Use thousands and millions (e.g., not lakhs and crores).
  • Use of italics and diacriticals should be minimized but used consistently. Avoid excessive use of italics for emphasis, but use italics for book titles, journal names, and foreign words.

1.3 Writing your paper

1.3.1 Make your article discoverable

When writing up your paper, think about how you can make it discoverable. The title, keywords and abstract are key to ensuring readers find your article through search engines such as Google. 2. Editorial policies

2.1 Peer review policy

Papers received will first undergo editorial scrutiny to judge suitability. The shortlisted papers will go through a double-blind peer-review process. The journal uses TURNITIN software to check the originality of submissions.

Differentiated Review Process

SAJBMC distinguishes itself in the ‘structure’ and ‘approach’ of its unique publishing review process.

Revolving Door Desk Review:

We ensure that the initial desk review is completed in three to four weeks’ time. The outcome of this stage decides if the case can be taken forward for peer review. Quick turnaround time helps the author to revise and resubmit or, for rejected cases, the author may consider some other journal. Authors are encouraged to remind the editor if Desk Review is taking more than three weeks.

Transparent Peer Review:

It is a blind review by two reviewers which is generally completed in three to four months. Cases are accepted only if both reviewers recommend ‘Acceptance’. Any dispute is resolved by the editor. The SAJBMC reviews are done with an approach of ‘Review and Improve’ and not ‘Review and Reject’.

We work with patience particularly with those submissions in which we see a potential to convert them into good research publications. We provide detailed tips for improvement especially to authors who are in their early stage of career.

2.2 Authorship

All parties who have made a substantive contribution to the article should be listed as authors. Principal authorship, authorship order, and other publication credits should be based on the relative scientific or professional contributions of the individuals involved, regardless of their status. A student is usually listed as principal author on any multiple-authored publication that substantially derives from the student’s dissertation or thesis.

2.3 Acknowledgements

All contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed in an Acknowledgements section. Examples of those who might be acknowledged include a person who provided purely technical help, or a department chair who provided only general support.

Please supply any personal acknowledgements separately to the main text to facilitate anonymous peer review.

2.3.1 Writing assistance

Individuals who provided writing assistance, e.g. from a specialist communications company, do not qualify as authors and so should be included in the Acknowledgements section. Authors must disclose any writing assistance – including the individual’s name, company and level of input – and identify the entity that paid for this assistance. It is not necessary to disclose use of language polishing services.

2.4 Funding

South Asian Journal of Business and Management Cases requires all authors to acknowledge their funding in a consistent fashion under a separate heading. Please visit the Funding Acknowledgements page on the SAGE Journal Author Gateway to confirm the format of the acknowledgment text in the event of funding, or state that: This research received no specific grant from any funding agency in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors

2.5 Declaration of conflicting interests

3. Publishing Policies

3.1 Publication ethics

SAGE is committed to upholding the integrity of the academic record. We encourage authors to refer to the Committee on Publication Ethics’ International Standards for Authors and view the Publication Ethics page on the SAGE Author Gateway

3.1.1 Plagiarism

South Asian Journal of Business and Management Cases and SAGE take issues of copyright infringement, plagiarism or other breaches of best practice in publication very seriously. We seek to protect the rights of our authors and we always investigate claims of plagiarism or misuse of published articles. Equally, we seek to protect the reputation of the journal against malpractice. Submitted articles may be checked with duplication-checking software. Where an article, for example, is found to have plagiarised other work or included third-party copyright material without permission or with insufficient acknowledgement, or where the authorship of the article is contested, we reserve the right to take action including, but not limited to: publishing an erratum or corrigendum (correction); retracting the article; taking up the matter with the head of department or dean of the author’s institution and/or relevant academic bodies or societies; or taking appropriate legal action.

For each case, the upper limit of similarity index is currently fixed at 15%.

3.1.2 Prior publication

If material has been previously published it is not generally acceptable for publication in a SAGE journal. However, there are certain circumstances where previously published material can be considered for publication. Please refer to the guidance on the SAGE Author Gateway or if in doubt, contact the Editor at the address given below.

3.2 Contributor’s publishing agreement

Before publication, SAGE requires the author as the rights holder to sign a Journal Contributor’s Publishing Agreement. SAGE’s Journal Contributor’s Publishing Agreement is an exclusive licence agreement which means that the author retains copyright in the work but grants SAGE the sole and exclusive right and licence to publish for the full legal term of copyright. Exceptions may exist where an assignment of copyright is required or preferred by a proprietor other than SAGE. In this case copyright in the work will be assigned from the author to the society. 3.3 Open access and author archiving

South Asian Journal of Business and Management Cases offers optional open access publishing via the SAGE Choice programme. For more information please visit the SAGE Choice website. 4. Preparing your manuscript for submission

4.1 Formatting

The preferred format for your manuscript is Word. Word templates are available on the Manuscript Submission Guidelines page of our Author Gateway.

4.2 Artwork, figures and other graphics

For guidance on the preparation of illustrations, pictures and graphs in electronic format, please visit SAGE’s Manuscript Submission Guidelines

Figures supplied in colour will appear in colour online regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For specifically requested colour reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from SAGE after receipt of your accepted article.

4.3 Supplementary material

This journal is able to host additional materials online (e.g. datasets, podcasts, videos, images etc) alongside the full-text of the article. For more information please refer to our guidelines on submitting supplementary files

4.4 Reference style

South Asian Journal of Business and Management Cases adheres to the APA reference style. View the APA guidelines to ensure your manuscript conforms to this reference style.

  • References: A consolidated listing of all books, articles, essays, theses and documents referred to (including any referred to in the tables, graphs and maps) should be provided at the end of the article.
  • Arrangement of references: Reference list entries should be alphabetized by the last name of the first author of each work. In each reference, authors’ names are inverted (last name first) for all authors (first, second or subsequent ones); give the last name and initials for all authors of a particular work unless the work has more than six authors. If the work has more than six authors, list the first six authors and then use et al. after the sixth author’s name.  
  • Chronological listing: If more than one work by the same author(s) is cited, they should be listed in order by the year of publication, starting with the earliest.  
  • Sentence case: In references, sentence case (only the first word and any proper noun are capitalized – e.g., ‘The software industry in India’) is to be followed for the titles of papers, books, articles, etc.  
  • Title case: In references, Journal titles are put in title case (first letter of all words except articles and conjunctions are capitalized – e.g., Journal of Business Ethics).  
  • Italicize: Book and Journal titles are to be italicized.

Citations and References should adhere to the guidelines below (based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition). Some examples are given below: In text citations:

  • One work by one author: (Kessler, 2003, p. 50) or ‘Kessler (2003) found that among the epidemiological samples..’.
  • One work by two authors: (Joreskog & Sorborn, 2007, pp. 50–66) or Joreskog and Sorborn (2007) found that..
  • One work by three or more authors: (Basu, Banerji & Chatterjee, 2007) [first instance]; Basu et al. (2007) [Second instance onwards].
  • Groups or organizations or universities: (University of Pittsburgh, 2007) or University of Pittsburgh (2007).
  • Authors with same surname: Include the initials in all the in-text citations even if the year of publication differs, e.g., (I. Light, 2006; M.A. Light, 2008).
  • Works with no identified author or anonymous author: Cite the first few words of the reference entry (title) and then the year, e.g., (‘Study finds’, 2007); (Anonymous, 1998).
    If abbreviations are provided, then the style to be followed is: (National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2003) in the first citation and (NIMH, 2003) in subsequent citations.
  • Two or more works by same author: (Gogel, 1990, 2006, in press)
  • Two or more works with different authors: (Gogel, 1996; Miller, 1999)

6. On acceptance and publication

6.1 SAGE Production

Your SAGE Production Editor will keep you informed as to your article’s progress throughout the production process. Proofs will be sent by PDF to the corresponding author and should be returned promptly. Authors are reminded to check their proofs carefully to confirm that all author information, including names, affiliations, sequence and contact details are correct, and that Funding and Conflict of Interest statements, if any, are accurate. Please note that if there are any changes to the author list at this stage all authors will be required to complete and sign a form authorising the change.

6.2 Online First publication

Online First allows final articles (completed and approved articles awaiting assignment to a future issue) to be published online prior to their inclusion in a journal issue, which significantly reduces the lead time between submission and publication. Aim And Scope

South Asian Journal of Business and Management Cases

(SAJBMC) is a peer-reviewed, tri-annual journal of Birla Institute of Management Technology, Greater Noida (India). The journal aims to provide a space for high-quality original research or analytical cases, evidence-based case studies, comparative studies on industry sectors, products, and practical applications of management concepts. The journal likes to publish problem-solving, decisional and applied types of cases. Such cases must have linkage with theory, at least one dilemma (also known as case issue) and a protagonist around whom the case issue will revolve. Publication of pure research, applied research and field studies with empirical data do not fall under the domain of SAJBMC. Fictitious cases are not welcome.

Theory linked cases

South Asian Journal of Business and Management Cases accept only such cases that are linked with theory. Each case published in the journal should help a faculty to cover either a theoretical concept or a framework or a model with the help of the case.

Expanding the scope of SAJBMC

South Asian Journal of Business and Management Cases (SAJBMC) publish a wide variety of ‘theory linked’ cases with problem-solving, decision focused and applied approaches. SAJBMC DOES NOT like only narrative cases.

With the rise of experiential learning, case studies remain a fundamental teaching tool in every subject area within the business school discipline. Cases are a critical component to any business school curriculum. But cases suffer from a severe lacuna. They are rarely cited. It is a challenge for a journal accepting only cases that needs to be tackled.

For the benefit of the authors and the case journal, the citations need to be increased. As guided by the Editorial Advisory Board the journal has decided to expand the scope from April 2020 issue to include original research articles from multiple disciplines outlining the latest management research and emphasizing management implications. The journal will accept high quality empirical and theoretical studies, literature reviews, and technical notes with important tactical implications and methodological research articles.

Articles on topics such as the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the future of work and organizations; the role and function of business in society; the phenomenon of start-ups; Do we need a manager in a digital workplace; Business of saving the planet and AI driven leadership in boardroom, may set out a number of theoretical approaches and attract citations of other authors. Such topics may generate discussions and reviews on the subject. Such titles are welcome.

However, the SAJBMC does not like Hypothesis based empirical studies that test a pre-formulated theory. Such submissions are not accepted.

The SAJBMC considers articles of following types:

Original Research

This is the most common type of journal manuscript used to publish full reports of data from research on single management issue as applied in a specific situation. It may be called an Original Article, Research Article, Research, or just Article. The Original Research format is suitable for many different fields and different types of studies. It includes full Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections.

Review Articles

Review Articles provide a comprehensive summary of research on a certain topic, and a perspective on the state of the field and where it is heading. They are often written by leaders in a particular discipline after invitation from the editors of a journal. Reviews are often widely read (for example, by researchers looking for a full introduction to a field) and highly cited. Reviews commonly cite approximately 100 primary research articles. SAJBMC invites review articles from the experts in respective domains.

Technical note

A technical note is a short article giving a brief description of a specific development, technique or procedure, or it may describe a modification of an existing technique, procedure or device applicable to management. The technique, procedure or device described should have practical value and should contribute to decision making in management. Technical notes are variously referred to as technical innovations or technical developments. The main criteria for publication will be the novelty of concepts involved, the validity of the technique and its potential for management applications.

Methodologies or Methods

These articles present a new experimental method, test or procedure. The method described may either be completely new, or may offer a better version of an existing method. The article should describe a demonstrable advance on what is currently available.

Teaching Note is not published

Please do not submit a teaching note. It is not published. The two essential information elements contained in a teaching note: the link to theory and case questions must be integrated into the main body of the case. Brief references of seminal type should be cited without indulging in a detailed literature review.

SAJBMC aspires to be known as a case focused research journal which

  1. Publishes FRESH cases from South Asia
  2. Selects cases with THEORETICAL LINKAGE to the concept, framework or model
  3. Reviews cases with an approach to IMPROVE rather than to reject
  4. Provides support to CONNECT with THEORY
  5. Responds QUICKLY: Revolving Door Desk review within 3-4 weeks and Transparent Peer review within 3-4 months

In short, SAJBMC is a bouquet of theory linked fresh cases from South Asia.

Preferred Case Focus

South Asian Journal of Business and Management Cases (SAJBMC) publish a wide variety of ‘theory linked’ cases with problem-solving, decision focused and applied approaches. SAJBMC DOES NOT like only narrative cases.

Cases from all management disciplines are welcome, including but not limited to the following:

  • Innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainability and CSR, human resources management, organization development, transnational cultural impacts, knowledge management, technology management;
  • Strategy, management interventions, organization experiences and practices, management science, management decision making, globalization, international trade;
  • Operations management, logistics, supply chain management, service operations management, marketing management, information technology;
  • Social enterprise management, NGOs and NPOs, public sector management, civic administration, public-private partnership.
  • Ethics, corporate governance, ecology, financial inclusion, business excellence, business process reengineering, Accounting, and finance

Journal prefers problem identification, decision focused, application-based cases containing contextual dilemma (such as ethical issues), cases that deals with recent business or people related issues, having strong linkages with theory, places dilemma before the reader within first two paragraphs, includes controversy, contrasts, conflicts, and other dramatic elements, all such cases will need the presence of protagonist. Cases written with primary data or single frim cases written with secondary data, must obtain the consent to publish from the target organisation and are written using 5000 words or less – tables and figures included.
